A Reflection on Oral Presentation

For our team's oral presentation, generally I felt that it was quite well done, despite the difficulties we encountered while preparing for it.

I can clearly recall all the obstacles we have encountered. Organising the information on hand into something that is convincing was actually rather difficult. It took quite some time to create a flow that will tell our story well, and the crude product was not quite what we expected. The speech I prepared for the team was too long-winded and it was good that Jonathan and Zhi Yan were able to diagnose the problem and condensed the presentation. As we kept exceeding the 20 minutes restriction, we practised until we were comfortably delivering the whole presentation within time limit. Hence, preparation wise I felt that we really did our part, and I was extremely relieved when we managed the final presentation within the limit.

Deliverance wise, after having been so long-winded, I decided to discard the actual speech and just spoke from confidence. I repeatedly tried as much as I could doing impromptu speeches and I felt that helped a lot cutting down unnecessary elaboration. I feel that the strongest part of our presentation was that all the team members believe very much in our project, having been through what we have presented. Hence, we were able to give a presentation that was very real, persuasive and not just informative.

The weakest part of our presentation probably comes from the fact that all three of us are science students, and basically we tend to be overly wordy. The slides could have been made better with more pictures trying to convey the message: not just photographs of examples, but also subtle pictures that show the idea, like showing a glass perhaps for transparency. I felt it was our blind spot as all three of us did not realise the presentation was wordy until it was mentioned. For myself, I felt that sometimes I was trying too hard to engage the audience that I forget which point I was trying to bring across, which actually happened once during the final presentation. It could have been a fatal mistake if I had not manage to bring myself back to the point I was illustrating.

All in all, despite the above problems which I have described, I think our team did a relatively good job. The teamwork was really there and I am sincerely really proud of the whole team.

  1. Hey Alvin, I agree that it was a challenge to condense our presentation to 20 minutes. I guess probably we have much to tell, explain and convince our audience that the residents are indeed facing some serious problems. However we managed to put up a rather good presentation, didn't we?

Here, I would like to thank you for all the ideas and suggestions you contributed. It was nice to have you in my group!I have learned a lot from you and Jon.

    All the best:)

  2. Hi Alvin

Yes I think that 20 min presentation is not enough for all members to cover their speech. I feel that your team has managed to pull it off by finishing the slides in an orderly manner without rushing through it. I must say that's very clam of your group to achieve that!

To speak confidently without following your prepared speech goes to show that you have prepared yourself pretty well. However, I do agree with you that sometimes you get quite long-winded in some slides. You could perhaps have another dry run with your mate to minimise such long-winded situation on the actual day.

Overall, I find that you have maintained good eye contact throughout the presentation and I think that eye contact is an important factor in delivery any presentation.

  3. Hi Alvin, it is obvious that your group had spent a lot of effort in preparing the presentation, and it was very impressive and clear. I agree the time is really limited to fully make the audience understand our proposal, but your group definitely pulled it off. Good luck and all the best with everything!

  4. Really liked our presentation, but I also thought that it was a little on the wordy side. Felt that you handled the elaboration very well, and being able to explain and convince others of your ideas is your strong point.

Thank you for the suggestions and ideas you brought to our group, and all the best for the upcoming exams!

  5. Hey Alvin,

I liked how you were composed during your presentation, and it's something that I can definitely take away from. I also liked how you utilised sound-visuals to effectively portray the problem at hand and it certainly would help in convincing the audience.

However personally, I feel that while your voice projection is good, I felt that more conviction and strength in your speech could reach out to the audience and deliver greater persuasion.

All the best ahead and see you around school!
