End of the (ES2007S) road...

*Breathes out a breath of reminiscence*

I could still vividly remember the first time Jon and I were walking to the class. I still remember Zu Rong was walking in front of us and I was betting with Jon he was a classmate. I remember we had our ice breakers, and were pleasantly surprised to find so many interesting foreign friends who were really outspoken and shared many ideas. I also remembered being pleasantly surprised to find a friend from a previous module.

Sorry if I am wordy, I tend to be while giving an ending speech.

That being said, I am really glad I took up this module, and it has taught me everything I wanted to find out about Professional Communication. I had taken another module "Interpersonal Effectiveness", and felt that this module would complete the skill set with professional communication on top of that at a interpersonal level.

I have always had the strong belief that 'honesty is the best policy', and have always been very frank with whomever it is I am speaking with; the most important thing I have taken away from this module is therefore, to speak with not just the heart but also with some brains at important moments. It is not really about lying, but rather, not divulging some of the inappropriate behaviours in professional communications. I feel that as a future teacher, I have probably learnt most of the important skills in communicating with the class, but I have not realised that communicating with parents, colleagues and superiors require very different skill sets.

Moreover, most of the more formal forms of communications are very much applicable at teacher-level presentations even if I may not be using them in class. At the very least, I can most certainly impart these skills to my future students: how to handle interviews, writing formal letters, resumes, applications, proposals, preparing for presentations, etc. Considering the 7Cs, I think it is really not easy to constantly remind oneself to apply all of them while writing and speaking, as very obviously I seem to always lack "Concise". Nevertheless, being aware of it is enough that while speaking or writing I will always have this mindset and I think it is a good habit to learn.

It has been a wonderful journey, one that I must admit was not easy. I was very apprehensive at first and was worried about the workload at the start of the module. It did get a little bit hectic, but the light at the end was worth walking through the tough road. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms Fazilah, all my classmates: Jon, Zhi Yan, Ting Ting, Renny, See Wan, Sally, Zu Rong, Greg, Kitty and Ashely, for giving me this enriching experience and wonderful memory. I am especially grateful to my group mates Jon and Zhi Yan, with whom I always manage to have fun while learning at the same time. We have come to the end of a road, but it is definitely not the end of the journey.

  1. Hi ALvin aka Hunter

It's been another great journey of collaboration in another module with you. Honestly, I chose to do this module professional communication is to better incorporate what I have learnt in the module interpersonal ineffectiveness you mentioned above. So can I say we are also hardworking and are constantly trying to improve our communication competence?

Anyway, I do agree with you that the formal skills we have learnt in this module complete our communication as a professionals. It could be to improve our communication to look for jobs or even a persuasive presenter in the future.

Lastly, I would like to thank you for your feedback to my blog post and I wish you all the best!
