Teaching has been my passion throughout my education life, although I only realised it in the recent years. I always had a knack of explaining ideas and concepts to my fellow peers, and it gives me tremendous satisfaction to help others learn better.
Effective communication skills are very important in the field of education. Besides the skills to impart knowledge, teachers also have the responsibility to instill characters, beliefs and values in their students, thus knowing how to communicate with them effectively is essential. These skills separate a great teacher who genuinely teaches from an ordinary teacher who only gives lectures.
Communicating effectively also includes listening skills and reading non-verbal signals, which contribute to the success of teaching. In enforcing wholesome education rather than just academic knowledge, it is not just the students that teachers communicate with. There is usually a team of other teachers, head-of-departments and principals, in addition to the parents and guardians that teachers have to deal with. As this profession revolves around people, communication skills then become even more imperative, in working with people to work with people. Understanding other peoples’ point of view through effective listening, being empathetic and learning how to communicate with them will allow one to understand students’ weaknesses more thoroughly, work in a team better, and avoid sticky situations with the parents. Finally, in learning these communication skills, I also hope to one day be able to impart them to my future students to help them communicate effectively.
Ya I totally agree that teachers play a crucial part in kids' education and growth. I have also noticed that among a group of friends, even some can solve a question, but not all have the ability to make others understand when explaining. So I am sure you gonna be a fantastic teacher!
ReplyDeleteI agree that effective communication is important to teachers because they have to tell and explain the concepts and principles to their students as clearly as possible. If students find that they could not understand their teacher in the first time, they will think that he cannot teach and will not be bothered to listen him to again.
ReplyDeleteAlvin, i think that you will be a good teacher cause i was able to feel your sincerity when you were talking about teaching. Jia you:)
Hi future teacher Mr Alvin! haha! I agree that the teacher role as a communicator is extremely important. It requires a great deal of effort from them to understand the student's well being and progress in schools. So knowing the importance of good communications, are there any skills you would like to improve on?
ReplyDeleteHello! I do agree that effective communication skills are essential if you want to be sucessful in the teaching field. Knowing your personality, I'm sure that your openness to new ideas and knack for words and explanations will make you an excellent teacher. You could put in more effort at active listening though, and all the best in pursuing your career!
ReplyDeleteThanks everybody for your comments! :D
ReplyDeleteThe one particular skill that I would definitely like to improve on is to learning how to read non-verbal messages and to decode the other party's body language and/or hidden messages. This is something I am not very good at. Sometimes I may be able to sense that something is wrong with someone, but people can be very good in hiding them. I think this would be very important especially in trying to create a helpful and conducive environment for any students in trouble or having problems that hinder their learning, be it classroom politics, family troubles, or plain learning difficulties.
